IC Information;
Character Name; Gilderoy Lockhart
Canon; Harry Potter
Canon Point; Just before he's dragged into going to investigate the newly opened chamber of secrets.
Age; Around mid-thirties? Roughly. About 35.

House; Loki
Power; Telepathy

Personality; Vanity is the be all and end all of Gilderoy Lockhart. Nothing is done for any other sake but to be noticed, to be seen and praised for how marvellous he is and how talented he can be. After all, what's the point of doing things if no one is going to praise you for it? Even if the achievements are not technically his at all, he will still take the credit if he can. And if he can't, he'll fix it so he can. He's not just a glory hog, he's a cheat and a manipulator, he steals others victories and accomplishments with no shame at all. That's just how he makes a living. After all, he needs something to write about in his books and what good would the average day to day life be?

Most form the impression that he's dim or lacking somewhere in the brain department judging by how generally ignorant and aloof he can be of others and the situation he's in. That along with his startling incompetence when it comes areas like combat and spells, completely unable to live up to the expectations of his books. But there's a reason he was sorted into Ravenclaw, he's not quite as bumbling as people think. The sheer amount of cunning he puts into lying and manipulating is impressive. And while years of misuse and neglect have made him somewhat shaky when it comes to magic, the one thing he's perfected to a fine art is memory charm. A spell he used to erase the minds of those who did something he wants to take credit for. Instead of practising and learning so he could achieve these feats himself, he'd rather scheme and lie to get them without all that horrible effort. After all, if he isn't good at something from the get-go, he just doesn't want to go through the trial and error of getting it wrong. And thanks to being coddled and spoilt as a child, he finds himself incapable of being wrong. Even when openly proved wrong, he refuses to retract or change, finding ways around it or simply pretending otherwise.

He has a remarkable level of ignorance to people around him, unable to see when people dislike him or just plain don't want him around. He's under the rather false impression that he's beloved and, outside a minority of teenage girls and bored housewives, he really isn't. Those who spend time with him and get to know him soon realise that he's unskilled and unaware, often leading to him making a mess and leaving before it's tidied. Of course telling Gilderoy he isn't wanted is a herculean task and he's just physically incapable of realising, even when told very plainly and obviously.

Hey, he's the life of the party, who wouldn't want him around? How would anyone laugh without his witty anecdotes!

While Gilderoy may be incompetent and arrogant, he's still very charming. After all, before he erased their memories, he was capable of convincing unaware wizards into sharing their best stories before he stole them. He has quite the fanclub, who are very loyal and admiring of him, and he's not afraid of shamelessly promoting himself to get on top. He's perhaps one of the bigger wizarding world celebrities, even if anyone with common sense tends to despise him. But lucky for Lockhart, the wizarding world is easily pulled into the charm of celebrity. Hence why his publications sell so well. Judging from that alone, he must be a talented writer. Or, perhaps more accurately, a talented liar with the ability to spin a grand self-praising tale to amuse the masses.

The fatal flaw that Gilderoy suffers from is that he's a coward, plain and simple. When things actually start to go wrong, he runs because he knows he can't actually fix it. All his bravery and heroics are just fiction and so the real thing is quite daunting. He's unpractised with his magic and lacking any real skills so he isn't really any match for proper danger. He'd happily throw whoever was accompanying him into the line of fire just to save himself, no matter who they were or what they were. It's often said that when his true cowardly nature shows, his beauty fades and he becomes uglier, weak chinned and pathetic.

You can say whatever you want about Gilderoy (and most of it would be right) but he loves his fans. Every piece of fanmail gets answered, everyone who waits in line gets a signed book, no one get missed out if Gilderoy can help it. Though that could admittedly be because there's nothing he loves more than signing his own name. And he doesn't much mind if you're not that much of a fan, he loves you anyway and you'll still end up with a signed picture. He's just that generous. And his not above dedicating his time to anyone he feels deserved special attention, like Harry Potter. Who, while he was willing to throw under the bus if need be, he'd also of mentored if he'd been given a chance. Though how realistic and possible that was can be argued.

Gilderoy is an overconfident liar with little real talent or skills but damn if he isn't amusing to watch. Hell, even when he's failing spectacularly, he's entertaining. Though people are often laughing at him, not with him. Not everyone can be perfect... though I'm sure Lockhart would hotly debate this matter.
